Leeds Banking Company

In the fall of 1999, on a trip to London, I purchased an old receipt from the Leeds Banking Company for the deposit of 50 Pounds. The receipt is dated July 21, 1863. I doubt that banks in England issued their own currency back then, as was the case in the United States, so receipts like these are nice and affordable relics of England's banking past.

Prague Transit Ticket

Although not an old bank note or check, I thought this item would be an interesting one to share. I was in Prague in the summer of 1990, back when the country was still called Czechoslovakia. These were the public transportation tickets that were used back then.

Old South African Check

About a decade and a half ago, while visiting relatives in London, I purchased a couple old checks from South Africa. The one shown below is quite interesting. It comes from Cape Town, South Africa yet it has written on the check The African Banking Corporation, Ltd., The Cape Of Good Hope Bank, Limited, and the Cape Of Good Hope Savings Bank Society. It was printed by Van de Sandt de Valliers & Co. Cape Town.

The denomination is forty four pounds and eight pence, payable to 4658 ??? or Bearer. The oval purple impression states: "African Banking Corporation Limited. The check was issued on January9 , 1892 and redeemed on January 21, 1892.

South Africa must have had a complex banking history for so many banks to be attributed on a single check.

The denomination is One Pound and 15 Shillings, payable to 33269 Smith or Bearer. The oval purple impression states: "Cape Of Good Hope Bank Limited. Cape Town" while the orange oval stamp states: "The Standard Bank Of South Africa Limited. Cape Town". The check was issued on July 26, 1890 and redeemed on August 1, 1890.
